the traditional name for the ↑Native American peoples who once lived on the ↑Great Plains in the western central US. They often fought each other and the white people who settled on their land. They include the ↑Arapaho, ↑Blackfoot, ↑Cheyenne, ↑Comanche, ↑Crow and ↑Sioux. Many now live on western ↑reservations (= land given and protected by the US government).
